Multiple languages

The languages of a shop are the languages of its start points. If a shop has a German and an English start point, you maintain its products in both languages – in the same record.

Default language

In the shop configuration, in the “Language” section, you set the default language: its texts sit on the record itself, and Consho falls back to it when a translation is missing. A shop with only one start point stays monolingual – nothing changes there.

Translating

Below the fields of the default language, a section “Translation: …” appears for each further language. Translatable are:

  • on the product: name, alias, short and meta description, description, warnings, safety information and the text values of the custom fields
  • on the product type and the manufacturer: name and alias
  • on properties, their values and the custom fields: the name

Variants have no translation of their own; they take the texts of their main product.

What falls back and what doesn't

  • Texts fall back to the default language.
  • The alias is mandatory: without a translation with an alias, the product does not exist in that language.
  • Warnings and safety information do not fall back. If they are missing in a language, the product is invisible there – a German warning on the English page helps nobody.

Addresses and language switching

Product, product type and manufacturer have an alias of their own per language, and redirects are kept per language. Filter addresses are language-neutral. The site structure takes care of switching languages on the website, as on any multilingual Contao site.

Findings

  • Product missing in a language (note): it has no translation with an alias there.
  • Invisible because of missing safety notices (warning): translate warnings or safety information.
