Gift vouchers

A gift voucher is credit the customer pays with. It is not a discount: the goods bought are taxed as usual, the voucher only pays for them.

Issuing by hand

Under Consho → Gift vouchers with “Issue voucher”: shop and currency, amount, validity and a note. Every change to the balance is a booking – issue, redemption, refund, withdrawal of the purchase or correction. You change the balance with “Correct balance” and a reason; you cannot take off more than is left. A voucher can be blocked.

Administrators only: issuing a voucher and raising a balance – both create value nobody paid for, in any amount and for any shop of the installation. Editors with access to the module see vouchers, block them and lower a balance with a negative correction; they do not see “Issue voucher”.

Selling as a product

  • Create a product type with the kind “Gift voucher”.
  • On the product, enter Value and Validity (months), 0 = unlimited. Several fixed amounts are variants; there is no freely chosen amount.
  • As the tax class, choose one with “Not taxable (multi-purpose voucher)” – or, for a single-purpose voucher, the tax class of the articles it is for, and switch on “Single-purpose voucher” on the product.
  • The voucher is only issued once the payment has arrived, also with “On account”. The buyer gets an e-mail with a PDF per voucher.

Consho knows multi-purpose and single-purpose vouchers. For a multi-purpose voucher no VAT is due when it is sold, and the receipt shows it as “not taxable”; only the goods paid with it are taxed, at the rate of those goods. A single-purpose voucher works the other way round, see below. Whether your vouchers are to be classified like this for tax purposes is your responsibility; this documentation is not tax advice.

Single-purpose vouchers

A single-purpose voucher is taxed when it is sold, at the rate of its tax class in the shop's country. The voucher keeps that tax class, rate and country.

  • Redeeming: it pays only for articles of the same tax class taxed in the shop's country at the same rate and delivered there – goods and downloads to another country do not count, even below the delivery threshold; for services the place of performance applies. Of a cart discount, only the part on these articles counts. Shipping, payment fees and other vouchers are not paid. Single-purpose vouchers are applied first, multi-purpose ones take the rest. If a voucher has nothing to pay for, or its rate has changed since its sale, the basket and the checkout say so; the basket once the delivery address is known.
  • Invoice: the lines show in full. Below the VAT, each voucher shows “of which already taxed with …”, followed by the remaining VAT. The e-invoice states the voucher as an allowance at its rate.
  • Withdrawal: a single-purpose voucher gets back no more than the withdrawn articles of its tax class cost, together with its share of the tax; the rest goes to the payment method. The refund page shows that share; it cannot be changed. Cancellations and invoice corrections state the tax with the opposite sign.
  • Without a rate (a “not taxable” tax class) or under reverse charge, the voucher is issued as a multi-purpose voucher. Changing the switch applies to vouchers sold afterwards.

Redeeming

In the basket under “Redeem gift voucher”, up to ten vouchers per purchase. Codes are 16 characters long; spaces, hyphens and lowercase letters in the input do no harm. In the checkout, Consho credits the vouchers, multi-purpose vouchers also against shipping, and shows “Left to pay”. If they cover everything, the payment method drops out. Any remaining credit stays on the voucher.

The invoice shows “Already paid” and “Amount outstanding”; the payment appears with the last four characters of the code.

Good to know

  • Vouchers are unlimited by default.
  • A refund goes back to the voucher first; an expired one becomes unlimited again as a result, a blocked one gets nothing. A single-purpose voucher gets back no more than the refunded articles of its tax class cost.
  • If the purchase of a voucher is cancelled, the vouchers of that order are blocked. A voucher that has already been redeemed cannot be withdrawn from.
  • Vouchers cannot be paid with vouchers; if a voucher pays part of the order, a payment method discount drops out.

Findings

  • Voucher product with a taxable tax class without “Single-purpose voucher”: it would be taxed twice – at the purchase and at the redemption.
  • Single-purpose voucher with a “not taxable” tax class: it is sold without VAT and therefore issued as a multi-purpose voucher.
  • Goods with a “not taxable” tax class: this class belongs on vouchers only.
  • Voucher product without a value.
