Tax classes and tax rates

Consho provides the technology; you are responsible for the content. This page describes what Consho does; it is not legal or tax advice.

A product carries a tax class, not a tax rate. The rate follows from class, country and date – and is recorded in the order at the purchase, so that old documents stay right even if a rate changes later.

In the back end

Under Consho setup → Taxes. For each tax class you create the rates through the “Rates” operation.

Namename it after the goods group, not the kind of rate – such as “Books” rather than “reduced”, because the same article may be taxed differently in different countries.
Country, Rate in percentthe delivery country the rate applies to; decimals are allowed.
Valid from / untilempty: always, or until further notice. A new rate applies from the start of the day – so a tax cut stays traceable on old documents.
Not taxable (multi-purpose voucher)no rate in any country; intended for vouchers only.

Which rate applies

  • Until a delivery country is known, the shop calculates with the rate of its home country (shop configuration, “Countries” section).
  • After that, the shop's country applies in principle; for goods and digital content to consumers in other EU countries, the customer's country, once “Tax at destination” is switched on (see OSS and tax report).
  • Services are charged at the rate of the shop's country.
  • For deliveries to countries outside the EU, the rate you set there applies, such as 0 %.
  • With a reverse charge, there is no tax (see Reverse charge and VAT ID check).

Shipping and payment fee

On the shipping method, under “VAT”, you choose the Tax on shipping: “proportional to the goods” (default) splits shipping over the rates in the basket – a book and a mug give two shipping lines – or a fixed tax class. The same exists on the payment method for a fee. Whether a payment fee is ancillary to the goods is not decided by Consho; without a choice, a payment method with a fee is not offered.

Findings

  • A rate is missing for a country in a class in use: orders from that country fail at the checkout, and in the home country the shop shows no prices for that class. Create the rate under “Taxes”.
  • Goods with a “not taxable” class: they would be sold without VAT.
